A trap primer is a flow control valve that adds water to a P-trap to maintain a water seal, preventing sewer gases from entering a building. There are two types of trap primers (1) Pressure-Drop Trap Primer and (2) An Electronic Trap Primer. - Available from J.R. Smith Fluid Controls

Just like the P-trap, a trap primer is relatively simple to understand. It’s a device that adds water to your plumbing trap. That’s it. And here’s why you need it.

If liquid doesn’t go down the drain often enough, the liquid seal – the water at the bottom of the U-shaped trap — will eventually evaporate. With the "water" seal gone, sewer gas is now able to get through the drain pipe and into your processing production rooms. That’s a serious problem, and can lead to a plumbing emergency or even a health emergency and/or food product recalls.
